Formerly known as Gauhati, this city of nearly 1 million population, is the capital of the northeast state of Assam and is the gateway to northeast India. It is a major river port city and one of the fastest developing cities in India, scenically situated between the southern banks of the mighty Brahmaputra river and the foothills of Shillong. Guwahati is recognized as the educational center of Assam and is the main economic center in the entire northeast region. The city name is derived from two Assamese words “Guwa” meaning arecanut and “Haat” meaning market. This city is known as the “City of Temples” with two most ancient Hindu temples, the Kamakhya Temple in the Nilachal hills and the Umananda Temple in the Bhasmachala hills, located in the city.
